This week we’re discussing the inspiration for the 1986 book The Haunted and the 1991 TV movie of the same name. The Smurl Haunting is a classic tale of poltergeist activity, auditory and visual phenomena, and ghost hunter shenanigans. After being displaced from their homes due to flooding on hurricane Agnes, Jack and Janet Smurl moved their family into a duplex in West Pittston, Pennsylvania. It wasn’t long before the madness began. Ed and Lorraine Warren were called in to investigate and obviously ended up making things much worse. Instantly declaring the presence of a demonic presence in classic Ed Warren fashion, they attempted several unsanctioned exorcisms of the home but ultimately suffered through this haunting for 15 years.
